What is cellular bonding, and do you need it?

Cellular bonding sends one video stream over two or more connections at the same time. The stream is cut into small pieces, the pieces travel over whichever connection can take them at that moment, and a service at the far end puts them back in order. If one network slows down or disappears, the others carry more and the stream stays up. You need it when no single connection where you stream can be trusted to hold your bitrate by itself: walking through a city, at a festival, on a train, anywhere crowded. You do not need it at a desk on a good wired line.

Bonding is not failover

Failover keeps a second connection waiting and switches to it when the first one fails. There is a gap while it notices and switches, and on a live stream a gap of a few seconds is a frozen picture or an ended broadcast.

Bonding uses every connection all of the time. Nothing has to notice a failure and nothing has to switch. When one connection drops from good to useless, the pieces of the stream that would have gone down it go down the others, and a viewer sees nothing.

Why bonding takes a service and not just a box

A platform expects one stream from one address. Pieces of a stream arriving from three networks at once mean nothing to it. So bonding always has two ends: the device that splits the stream, and a service on the internet that receives the pieces, puts them back in order and sends one clean stream on to the platform.

That second half is why bonding is sold as a service. It is also why a bonding service counts usage differently from a SIM: it counts the stream coming in and every copy it sends out.

What you can bond

Any mix of connections: SIMs on different mobile networks, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Starlink. Starlink can be used on its own or bonded with other connections.

The mix matters more than the count. Two SIMs on the same network usually share the same mast, so when that cell is crowded both slow down together. Two SIMs on different networks rarely have their worst moment at the same time, which is the whole point. It is why Lumbus Multi-network SIMs work across several networks at once.

What bonding uses

Splitting a stream and protecting it costs some extra traffic. Plan on about 20% on top of your video bitrate: at 8 Mbps, about 4.3 GB an hour instead of 3.6.

More connections do not multiply that. Two, six or twelve connections carry the same total, divided between them. A weak network raises usage, because more has to be sent again. The number of connections by itself does not.

When you do not need bonding

When one connection is enough. A single SIM, an Ethernet line, Wi-Fi or Starlink streams perfectly well by itself, and at a desk on a wired line that is the right setup. Bonding would add cost and nothing else.

It is worth being plain about this, because bonding is often sold as something every streamer must have. With Lumbus, one connection needs neither bonding nor a Lumbus Connect pack. Bonding earns its place the moment you depend on mobile networks you do not control.

How it works with Lumbus

Questions

What is bonded cellular?
One video stream sent over several mobile connections at the same time and put back together at the far end, so the stream survives when any one network slows down or drops.
Is bonding the same as load balancing?
No. Load balancing spreads separate connections across several lines, so any one stream still travels down a single line and dies with it. Bonding splits one stream across all of them.
Is bonding the same as failover?
No. Failover switches to a spare connection after the first one fails, which leaves a gap. Bonding uses every connection all the time, so there is nothing to switch.
Does bonding give me more upload speed?
It lets one stream use the capacity of several connections together, less the overhead of splitting it. What it gives you above all is steadiness: the stream no longer depends on any one network.
Does bonding use more data?
About 20% more than the video by itself, to plan on. It does not multiply with the number of connections.
Can I bond Starlink with 4G or 5G?
Yes. Starlink can be used on its own or bonded with other connections. On its own it does not need Lumbus Connect. Bonded with another connection, it does.
Can I bond two SIMs from the same network?
You can, but expect less from it. Two SIMs on one network usually share the same mast, so they tend to slow down together. Different networks are what make bonding worth having.
Do I need bonding to stream from home?
Rarely. One good wired connection is steadier than any bond of mobile ones. Bonding is for places where you depend on mobile networks.
Do I need Lumbus Connect with one SIM?
No. Lumbus Connect is only used when you combine two or more connections at the same time. A single SIM, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Starlink connection streams without it.
I already own a bonding rig from another manufacturer. Can I use Lumbus SIMs in it?
Yes, subject to network and device compatibility: Lumbus SIMs can be delivered to fit in hardware you already own, and Lumbus Studio takes any transmitter/encoder that can send SRT or RTMP. You keep paying your equipment provider for its own bonding licence.
