Why your IRL stream keeps dropping

A stream on the move drops for one reason: for a few seconds, the connection could not carry the bitrate you asked of it. The fixes are about making that matter less. Ask for less, have more than one network to ask, and put something between you and the platform that holds the broadcast open while your signal comes back. Most advice skips the last one, and it is the one that stops a drop from ending your stream.

Full bars tell you nothing about upload

The bars on a phone show how strongly it hears the mast. They say nothing about how many other people that mast is serving, and nothing about how much you can send. Streaming is upload, and networks give far less room to upload than to download.

So you can stand in the middle of a city with full bars and a stream that will not hold 4 Mbps. Test the upload where you will actually be, not at home the night before.

Crowds are the usual culprit

A festival, a stadium, a protest, a busy station: thousands of phones sharing the same few masts, most of them trying to send video at the same moment you are. Every one of them is sharing the same upload. It is the most common way an IRL stream dies, and a better phone does not help, because the limit is not in your hand.

Moving is the other one

Walk, drive or take a train and your connection is handed from one mast to the next. Most handovers go unnoticed. Some take a second or two, and a second or two with no upload is long enough to break a stream that has nothing in reserve. Tunnels, lifts and the inside of large buildings do the same thing more bluntly.

Your bitrate is set for the best moment

Most people pick a bitrate that looks good while they are standing still with a fine signal, then walk into streets where the network can carry half of it. A stream that asks for 8 Mbps from a connection that can give 5 does not degrade politely. It stalls.

Set the bitrate for the worst street on your route, not the best one. A steady 4 Mbps looks better to a viewer than 8 Mbps that freezes every few minutes.

The fixes, in the order to try them

Each step costs more than the one before it, so stop at the one that fixes your stream.

  • Lower the bitrate. It is free, and it fixes more streams than anything else on this list.
  • Send SRT instead of RTMP where you can. It recovers lost packets without letting delay build up.
  • Carry a second network. A SIM on a different network rarely has its worst moment when the first one does.
  • Bond them. Two or more connections used at the same time, so neither has to be good all of the time. One connection does not need bonding. Two or more do.
  • Put a studio between you and the platform, so that a drop on your side is no longer a drop on the platform’s side.

What your viewers see when you drop

Stream straight to a platform and your viewers get whatever the platform does with a feed that has stopped: a frozen frame, a spinner, and on many platforms an ended broadcast if the feed stays away long enough. Then you start again, with a new broadcast and whoever comes back.

Before you go live

Five checks that take less time than restarting a broadcast.

  • Test upload at the place and at the hour you will stream, not somewhere convenient.
  • Set the bitrate for the worst part of the route.
  • Have a second network with you, even if it is only a friend’s phone as a hotspot.
  • Start with a full battery and carry power. Sending video is among the hardest work a phone or a modem does.
  • Keep the kit out of direct sun. A hot phone slows itself down to cool off, and the stream suffers first.

Why does my stream drop when I walk around?
Your connection is being handed from mast to mast, and the upload available changes from street to street. A bitrate that held where you started may be more than the next street can carry.
Why is my stream lagging with full signal bars?
Bars show how strongly your phone hears the mast, not how much you can send or how many people are sharing it. In a crowd, a full-strength signal can carry very little upload.
What upload speed do I need to stream?
Comfortably more than your bitrate, because the speed you measure is a best moment and not a promise. Many streamers aim for at least half as much again, and set the bitrate lower rather than hope.
Will 5G stop my stream from dropping?
5G gives a mast more room, which helps, but it does not change what a crowd or a handover does. A crowded 5G cell still runs out of upload.
What is a BRB scene?
Be right back: a designed screen your viewers see while your feed is away, instead of a frozen frame. A cloud studio switches to it by itself and switches back when your signal returns.
Does the platform end my stream if I lose signal?
Many platforms end a broadcast when the feed stays away long enough. How long varies by platform. A studio between you and the platform keeps sending, so the platform never sees the gap.
